Converting a switching station

Location: New York, NY
Status: Study completed 2012
Program: Design and feasibility to convert the upper floors of an Art Deco telephone building
Size: Approx 90,000 SQF /  8,361 SQM

Converting the upper floors of a former telephone building into 80 residential units—the footplates introduces the challenge to provide proper light and exposure without losing the qualities of the original expanse and considering the immense depth that are a detriment to habitable spaces. We proposed a system of collective services—the Living Block—that defines the units interiors together with sequential niches in the hallways—the Pockets— that creates rhythm on approach to the units.
